We are pleased to welcome you to the Quark Matter 2012 Conference at the
Omni Hotel in Washington DC. In general, please see the Conference website
which has most of the information that you will need or want. Below we have
provided some information that you should read prior to embarking upon your
travel. You will find it useful upon your arrival in Washington and once at
the Hotel.
Please see the Washington DC weather information (there is a link from
the QM website) before you pack for your trip. The hotel is air conditioned,
but typically the outside temperatures this time of year reach near 90°
F and lows 70-75° F. So, make sure to pack light
clothing for your escapades in Washington.
Bus schedule from Dulles to the Metro Station (least expensive) can be
found at
http://www.washfly.com/flyer_bus_schedule.htm.
Note that the Omni Hotel is located 1/2 block from the Woodley Park
(Zoo/Adams Morgan) Metro Station on the Red Line of the Washington
Metro.
Agenda
For the latest agenda, please see the Indico agenda. A compact, printed
version will be handed out at check-in at the Conference Reg desk. There
is also an app for smartphones. The web agenda is synchronized with an
IPhone/IPad/Android app called "Conference4me" that is available free
for downloading (http://conference4me.psnc.pl/?page_id=28).
The app database is synchronized twice per day (and on demand in case of
more frequent changes).
Registration
Registration will be open on Saturday afternoon and evening for student
arrivals. It will be open Sunday late afternoon and evening, and all day
Monday for attendees. If you have pre-registered please stop by to pick
up your registration information, agenda and nametag in a compact
carrying pouch. Accompanying persons will need to register for specific
events and lunches. Please wear your pouch with nametag for all
conference functions. Only those who have registered will be admitted to
the QM functions.
Reception (Monday)
There is a Reception on Monday evening starting at 7:30 PM in the
National Portrait Gallery of the Luce Center of the Smithsonian American
Art Museum. This requires transportation from the Metro stop near the
Omni to the Gallery Place (Chinatown) Metro stop via the Washington
Metro. In order to avoid a major delay of > 700 people at the 4 Metro
ticket vending machines on Monday evening, we urge you to purchase Metro
tickets at the Metro Station before the Reception (Sunday or at lunch or
a break on Monday). See point 1 above for more Metro info.
Special Evening Public Lecture (Tuesday)
There will be a public lecture on Tuesday evening (7 - 8 PM) on "Energy
for the 21st Century World Economy: Problems and Opportunities"
presented by Prof. Wolfgang Bauer from Michigan State University. So,
make your Tuesday dinner plans for afterwards!
Conference Dinner (Thursday)
The Conference Dinner will be held on Thursday evening in the Omni
Ballroom. There will be an after-dinner talk titled "Death from the
Skies" by scientist and writer Dr. Phil Plait.
Student and Teachers' Day
The student day lunch on Sunday is available only to registered young
scientists attending Student Day.
The QM Office and reception desk phone number is located in the back
of your pocket agenda booklet in case of emergencies. Instructions for
use of the internet are also in the booklet.
Instructions for speakers and poster presenters are located on the
QM webpage.
We look forward to seeing you in Washington and a very stimulating
Conference.
Sincerely,
John, Thomas and Dima for the
